In Mrs. Martinez's 2nd grade class, students started by learning the anatomy/parts of a pumpkin. Then they estimated how many seeds the large pumpkin would have compared to a medium and small pumpkin.

Then they removed all the seeds to begin counting.  The students from the big pumpkin put seeds in groups of 10s, the medium pumpkin counters put the seeds in groups of 5s, and the small Pumpkin counters put them in groups of 2s. Students were able to compare their estimation to the count to see how close they were.

To top off the lesson, students got to eat the cooked pumpkin seeds!

Students in Mrs. Simon's room 27 were able to look at a whole pumpkin and break it down into several parts to create a Brace Map.  Students then went around the room to read off their maps to their peers.  The following day they were able to write a small paragraph from the map.

Students listen to their partner while reading off the map.
